The best time to post on Instagram is Tuesday afternoon, between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. in your audience's local time. Wednesday is the best day overall. The worst window is 1 a.m. to 6 a.m., when almost no audience is awake.

Top guides disagree with each other, and most of them hide why. One study says Friday morning, another says Thursday at 9 a.m., and a third says Monday evening. They disagree because they measure different things: different samples, different time spans, and different definitions of engagement. This guide puts the four big 2026 studies side by side, names the one window they all agree on, and gives you a four-week test to find your own best time.

Start with the consensus, not with one study. Tuesday at 3 p.m., 5 p.m., and 7 p.m. is the only window that Sprout Social, Buffer, and Hootsuite all recommend. Sprout Social studied nearly 2 billion engagements across about 307,000 profiles. Buffer studied 9.6 million Instagram posts from January 2024 to December 2025. Hootsuite studied more than 1 million social posts across 118 countries. When three studies built on different data agree on the same hours, that agreement is worth more than any single study's headline.

Buffer names Thursday at 9 a.m., Wednesday at 12 p.m., and Wednesday at 6 p.m. as its top three slots, with Wednesday as its best day overall. Sprout Social names Monday to Thursday as its best days, with Tuesday 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. as its strongest Tuesday window. Hootsuite names Monday 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday 5 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday 5 p.m., and Thursday 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. All three name Friday and Saturday as weak days, and all three name the overnight hours as the worst time to post.

Worked example: test the consensus window on your own account. Post three times a week for four weeks, always on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in your audience's local time. Count engagement rate for each post as engagements divided by followers, times 100. Suppose a post reaches 34 engagements on 1,000 followers. That is 34 divided by 1,000, times 100, which equals 3.4 percent. Suppose your usual posts average 21 engagements on the same 1,000 followers. That is 2.1 percent. The Tuesday post beats your average by 3.4 minus 2.1, which is 1.3 percentage points. Divide 1.3 by 2.1 and multiply by 100, and the Tuesday slot is about 61.9 percent better than your average.

Run the test fairly. Post the same kind of content at each test time, because a Reel and a photo do not compare. Test at least three posts per slot before judging it, because one viral post or one flop says nothing. Keep the test to four weeks, then keep the best two slots and drop the rest. After that, test one new slot a month against your winners.

Mind the time zone, not the clock on your wall. Every study reports times in the audience's local time. If most of your followers live three hours behind you, a 5 p.m. post in their time zone goes out at 8 p.m. in yours. Check your audience's top cities in Instagram Insights before choosing a slot. Posting at the right hour in the wrong time zone is the same as posting at the wrong hour.

Posting time is a small lever, not the whole machine. The head of Instagram has said the strongest signals are how many people watch, like, comment, share, and save a post in its first hours. A good post at a mediocre time beats a weak post at a perfect time. Fix the time first because it is free, then keep improving the post itself.

Q: What is the single best time to post on Instagram?

A: Tuesday between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. in your audience's local time is the only window all three major studies agree on.

Q: What is the best day to post on Instagram?

A: Wednesday is the best day overall in Buffer's data of 9.6 million posts. Friday and Saturday are the weakest days in every large study.

Q: What is the worst time to post on Instagram?

A: Between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. in your audience's local time. Engagement is lowest overnight on every day of the week.

Q: How do I find my own best posting time?

A: Post three times a week for four weeks at the consensus slots, measure engagement rate per post, and keep the two slots that beat your average.
