Few travel frustrations match settling into a long flight, opening your streaming app, and discovering that the film you planned to watch needs an internet connection you do not have. Most major streaming services do offer offline downloads, but the rules around them are easy to miss, and a download that worked at home can expire or refuse to play at exactly the wrong moment.

Most subscription services allow downloads on phones and tablets through their official apps, though the selection varies by title. Licensing agreements decide which films can be downloaded, so a film available to stream may not be available offline, and the app will usually say so on the title page. Free ad-supported services are more restrictive, and some offer no downloads at all.

Purchased and rented films are a different case. A film you buy outright is generally yours to download and keep within that service's app, while a rental usually comes with a viewing window that starts when you press play. Check both the download option and the expiry information before you rely on a rental for a trip.

Downloaded titles do not last forever. Many services set a window of days or weeks after download, and a shorter window, often two days, once you start watching. Some services also limit how many devices can hold downloads at once, or how many titles you can download in total. If you travel with a phone and a tablet, download to the device you will actually watch on rather than both.

Downloads also need a periodic internet check-in to confirm your subscription is still active, even if the film itself plays offline. That means you should open the app while you still have Wi-Fi before departure, let it verify, and only then switch to flight mode. A download verified at home is far more reliable than one grabbed in a rush at the airport.

A two-hour film in high definition can take up several gigabytes, so check your free storage before you start downloading a whole trip's worth of viewing. Most apps let you choose download quality, and standard definition is perfectly watchable on a phone or tablet screen while saving both space and download time. Download over Wi-Fi, not mobile data, unless you have a generous plan.

Battery matters too. Offline playback uses less power than streaming, which is a genuine advantage on a long flight, but a bright screen at full brightness will still drain a phone quickly. Lower the brightness, use headphones rather than the speaker, and consider a portable charger for anything longer than a few hours.

The night before you travel, pick your films, download them on Wi-Fi, and play the first minute of each one to confirm it works. Check the expiry date on any rentals, and make sure your app has verified your subscription. Pack headphones, and if you are travelling with children, download their choices separately so a single expired title does not ruin the journey.

With that routine, offline viewing becomes boring in the best way: films that simply play, wherever you are, without buffering, without roaming charges, and without the scramble for airport Wi-Fi. The preparation takes twenty minutes, and it pays for itself the moment the seatbelt sign comes on.

One last point is worth checking before a long trip: make sure the device you download to is the one you will actually use, and that it has enough battery and storage for the whole journey. A tablet with a large screen is often more comfortable than a phone for films, while a phone is easier to hold on a crowded train. Whichever you choose, test it at home first, and you will travel with films that simply work when you need them most.
